Ever feel like you’ve rummaged through your entire closet, and yet still have nothing to wear? It’s a common problem that a lot of us experience. With trends coming and going all the time and we as people constantly changing and evolving, it can easily feel like our closet is outdated. But how are we supposed to fix this problem? Get rid of everything? Go and buy all new clothes? Sure, why not if you can afford it. But for most of us, unfortunately that really isn’t an option. However, there are some different things you can do to spruce up your closet without spending a cent! And we’re going to talk about one of them today.
Most of us have a couple articles of clothing that we consider staples, or favorites. Something that we wear a lot because either we really like it, it goes with everything, or maybe it’s just easy and requires no fuss. As much as I love clothes, even I’ll admit to days of just wanting to throw something on so I can run out the door as quickly as possible. What this fashion trick will teach you though, is how to use one or two clothing staples to create multiple outfits. It’s simple really, find an outfit you love. Take everything but the basic staples away, and then add a different jacket, shoes or accessories to make a completely new outfit. It’s a trick that requires little brain power while still giving you the chance to be creative and have fun.

Both of the looks above while very different, feature the same pair of boyfriends jeans, shirt, belt, and earrings, as well as the same make up. The things that changed are the shoes, the purse, hat/hair, scarf and jacket. For the look on the left, we’ll title it look #1 I went for a more sleek hair style, and focused the outfit on the basics themselves. The black purse and black combat boots add a simple color contrast between the leopard print and the jeans, helping pull the ensemble together while still giving off a relaxed attitude. For look #2 I grabbed a floppy hat, a grandma sweater, scarf and switched out the shoes and purse. The hat alone completely changes the look, but the sweater and scarf emphasizes a more cozy wintry feel. The bag makes the outfit feel more granola as opposed the sleek, and the shoes add a little cozy classy vibe with a heel.

These two looks are completely different but as you can see they use the same staples as a base. Experimenting with basics or staples in your wardrobe is the best and most cost effective secret to keeping your style up to date and fresh. Taking an outfit and asking questions like how could I make this different? What would it look like if I took away “_____” or added “_____”? Answering a few of these questions can be a really fun and liberating way to play with fashion and inspire your style. It doesn’t take much to completely change how an outfit looks. Taking my hair down and adding a hat was an easy change, then I just added a couple accessories from there. Now the next time you scour your closet and feel like you have nothing to wear, take a step back for a minute. Do you have something you wear all the time that you could tweak? Maybe you have an outfit you know you love but a different jacket would totally change things up. Whatever the idea, try it out! It’s super easy and really fun to see what you can come up with shopping and reinventing straight out of your own closet!
