Scrunchies

Scrunchies are one of the most popular trends right now and I love it, but I didn’t always. When I first saw scrunchies coming back in style a few years ago I pretended it wasn’t happening. To this day I don’t know for sure the reason why, but I truly despised the puffy hair tie. So the question remains, why am I all of a sudden on the scrunchie train now, if I hated them in the past? The answer is actually very simple. The five year olds won me over. As a little girl I loved ballet, and even as a college student I took ballet for a couple trimesters because I love how romantic and whimsical it can be. As the scrunchie trend became bigger and bigger I started to see more and more people of all different ages sporting them around.

Finally I saw a group five year olds that changed everything for me. Scampering about in their leotards and wrap skirts, using all colors of scrunchies to secure their little buns on their teeny tiny heads, and that was it. The scrunchie had brought out my inner five year old and I couldn’t go back. As of that point on I was securely aboard the scrunchie train and I’m not getting off any time soon. Currently I use scrunchies as my accessory of choice. The great thing about these hair ties are that they come in a variety colors and prints but also in a variety of fabrics. I’m still trying them all out but I think I like silk and velvet the best. I love that the beauty industry is coming out with more and more options for hair accessories that don’t damage our hair as much as the traditional hair tie. For me personally, I’m trying to grow my hair out so I’ll take all help I can get! I love that I can put my hair up in a ballet bun and still know I’m being kinder to it when I use a scrunchie as opposed to a traditional hair tie. Plus it looks so, so, cute! The best of both worlds!

Beyond fabrics and colors scrunchies also come in a variety of sizes. For example, you can see from the photos that the light pink scrunchie is bigger than the other three I’m wearing on my arms. It’s great to have the size variety because everyone has different hair and accessory needs. Some people want something super noticeable, while others want something more low key. Another interesting thing about scrunchies currently, is that although they are classified as a hair accessory, they have also become popular as a bracelet. Some people walk around with their arms full of scrunchies as a fashion statement. You know something is popular when just having it around your arm becomes a fashion statement.

So what do you think of scrunchies? Do you love them or hate them? Do you not care about them at all? This one hair tie has opened up whole new trend names, for example, the VSCO girl. Who knew a chunk of elastic with scrunched up fabric could be so popular to kick start a new brand of person? Let me know in the comments what you think about this trend and if it will have true stay power, or if it’ll come and go like so many trends before!
