Comfort Clothes

The last couple weeks have been pretty crazy to say the least. With the Corona virus and everything that comes along with it, I know many people are dealing with loss or different related hardships at this time. In my personal corner there’s been plenty of stress and anxiety going around. Because of this frenzy it’s been really important to me to post this week in efforts to recreate some normalcy in my life by focusing on something I can control; my blog. There is a lot that is out of our hands, but I think it’s good to take control where we can, and try to stay positive during this time as much as possible. With that said, I have some comfy cozy inspiration for you this week. Seeing as many people are on house arrest of some kind, I thought I’d come in with some comfort clothes.

For me, when I use the term comfort clothes it’s actually very broad. I could be talking about clothes that I want to lay around the house in, or I could be talking about an outfit that makes me feel my best or more comfortable in my own skin. This week we are talking about the lay-around-the-house kind, but I’ll touch more on the latter in another post soon. As I’ve mentioned in the past I like to have an outfit for every occasion. So of course when I’m at home and just lazin’ around for a day I still have an outfit for that activity. As silly as it may sound, having an a planned outfit, even if it’s as simple as a hoody and a sweats, is very important to me. I like to dress very intentionally because it boosts my confidence to wear clothes I’ve thoughtfully selected, and that truly feel like me. This weeks comfy cozy look is very simple– sweats and a long sleeve shirt. It’s not complex, it’s not new or a crazy fashion trend, but it’s an outfit that is 100% cozy, 100% comfy, and I love to wear it when I’m lounging around the house. We all have a favorite pair of sweats right? Maybe for you it’s yoga pants, or pajama pants, but it all falls under the cozy vibes category.

The shirt I chose for this snugly ensemble brings out my inner child by sporting a sparkly pink unicorn! Is there anything better? I love unicorns and sparkles, and really anything fantasy related. For me, this shirt makes me feel warm and fuzzy on the inside and the outside. I also love the muted pinky-purple color of it, and the heather grey on the upper part of the shirt. My pants, which are jogger types sweats, which are also heathered, but in black. I love this shirt and pants combo because they both have similar color schemes. The black cuffs on the sleeves of the shirt match the black of the sweats, and the light pink sides of the pants match the color of the unicorn on the shirt. I like that these colors are light and sort of pastel but don’t necessarily remind me of Easter eggs or marshmallow peeps. It’s a simple outfit that’s easy to move in and will be comfortable throughout the day spent at my house. If I’m feeling really snugly I’ll add some fluffy socks but for today they weren’t necessary. If I was going to go out somewhere to run and errand or something, I’d simply grab my favorite black and white Fabletics sneakers, and a black coat and be able to run out the door easily.

This weeks outfit is rather simple but fashion isn’t always complex. Sometimes you only need a couple pieces to create the perfect outfit, and for this weeks home inspired look that’s all there is to it. If you like this look be sure to let me know in the comments and if you want to know where I found these pieces stay tuned because I have a whole post talking all about it soon! I hope everyone has a restful week and continues to see the best in a very weird time, sending love always and thanks for reading!

Scrunchies

Scrunchies are one of the most popular trends right now and I love it, but I didn’t always. When I first saw scrunchies coming back in style a few years ago I pretended it wasn’t happening. To this day I don’t know for sure the reason why, but I truly despised the puffy hair tie. So the question remains, why am I all of a sudden on the scrunchie train now, if I hated them in the past? The answer is actually very simple. The five year olds won me over. As a little girl I loved ballet, and even as a college student I took ballet for a couple trimesters because I love how romantic and whimsical it can be. As the scrunchie trend became bigger and bigger I started to see more and more people of all different ages sporting them around.

Finally I saw a group five year olds that changed everything for me. Scampering about in their leotards and wrap skirts, using all colors of scrunchies to secure their little buns on their teeny tiny heads, and that was it. The scrunchie had brought out my inner five year old and I couldn’t go back. As of that point on I was securely aboard the scrunchie train and I’m not getting off any time soon. Currently I use scrunchies as my accessory of choice. The great thing about these hair ties are that they come in a variety colors and prints but also in a variety of fabrics. I’m still trying them all out but I think I like silk and velvet the best. I love that the beauty industry is coming out with more and more options for hair accessories that don’t damage our hair as much as the traditional hair tie. For me personally, I’m trying to grow my hair out so I’ll take all help I can get! I love that I can put my hair up in a ballet bun and still know I’m being kinder to it when I use a scrunchie as opposed to a traditional hair tie. Plus it looks so, so, cute! The best of both worlds!

Beyond fabrics and colors scrunchies also come in a variety of sizes. For example, you can see from the photos that the light pink scrunchie is bigger than the other three I’m wearing on my arms. It’s great to have the size variety because everyone has different hair and accessory needs. Some people want something super noticeable, while others want something more low key. Another interesting thing about scrunchies currently, is that although they are classified as a hair accessory, they have also become popular as a bracelet. Some people walk around with their arms full of scrunchies as a fashion statement. You know something is popular when just having it around your arm becomes a fashion statement.

So what do you think of scrunchies? Do you love them or hate them? Do you not care about them at all? This one hair tie has opened up whole new trend names, for example, the VSCO girl. Who knew a chunk of elastic with scrunched up fabric could be so popular to kick start a new brand of person? Let me know in the comments what you think about this trend and if it will have true stay power, or if it’ll come and go like so many trends before!

Zella Leggings

Where do you wear leggings? As one of the most comfortable and versatile pieces of clothing, I’d infer many people would answer “everywhere” to this question. Leggings are made in every color, print and fabric, and are sold by numerous brands. They’re so popular in fact, it’s possible to find leggings for basically every occasion. The real question is, what leggings are right for you? This week for the first ever review hosted on Maverick Elephant, I am reviewing the famous Zella brand’s Live In High Waist Leggings. As a girl that wears leggings for a variety of activities, i.e. running errands, vegging at home, working out, hikes, or as part of a full stylized outfit; plain black leggings are a must. Now the first thing I do when trying on a new pair of leggings is the initial bend over test. As silly as it may feel when you try to catch a good look at your backside in the mirror, it’s crucial in telling you if your leggings are see through or not. When I did the initial bend over test with my Zella leggings I was ecstatic to find that they are NOT see through. This fact shouldn’t be a revelation, but with the reality of almost all leggings being see through, it is.

I’ve bought leggings from many different brands at all different price points, and found after a month or so I’ve been wrong about the initial bend over test. It’s actually such a common problem I’ll often wear spandex underneath my leggings for an extra layer just in case. This is why I’ve waited to do this review. I wanted to wear the leggings for a couple months to truly know if after some wear they were see through or had any other issues. Now, after having the Zella leggings for a couple months, I’m pleased to tell you they passed the initial and prolonged bend over test.

After the two bend over tests the next most important thing is look and feel. Look wise these are extremely versatile, they are black and high-wasted, so they go with anything and could be used for many different outfits. I showcase this effect right here with two very different looks. One look for an every day cozy grunge vibe, and one look for a good workout. Super comfortable and super functional, they can be dressed up or down as seen in these shots. Further, since Zella leggings are made out of a moisture-wicking fabric they are perfect for working out and not getting too sweaty. The fabric is actually my favorite things about these leggings because of how the it hugs the body. It’s not in a tight uncomfortable way, but in a calming way due to the compression fabric. The fabric makes Zella leggings super durable as well as flattering; the perfect combo. They’re slimming and show off your figure, but remain so, comfortable –hence the live in leggings part of their name.

Although I loved these leggings from the second I put them on, I wasn’t sure about the our long term relationship. Fortunately, after having them for awhile now, I feel comfortable saying that they are by far the best quality leggings I’ve encountered. For example, they are better quality than Forever 21 or Fabletics leggings. Two brands I commonly see advertised in contrast to Zella leggings. Zella leggings are more expensive than those brands, but Zella’s quality will outlast those, as well as brands of similar quality and style. As for higher end brands Zella leggings fit right in. For example, they are better quality than Kari Traa, and surpass every Nike legging I’ve ever tried. I cannot personally speak for their similarity to Lululemon as I haven’t tried the Lululemon brand yet. However, I did do some digging and the majority of reviews put Zella leggings and Lululemon leggings in the same bracket as far as quality, fit and feel. Overall I would say Zella’s Live In High Waist Leggings not only support a variety of outfits and activities, but they truly live up to their name as leggings you would want to wear every day. If you are on the lookout for some great leggings these would be an excellent addition and I’m sure they would become a fast staple in your closet. Sweater Weather

This week is all about sweaters! Wear them inside, wear them outside, to parties, events, to bed, wherever! They’re perfect for almost any occasion. In the Pacific Northwest (PNW) we get a lot of mixed weather, so sweaters are an essential item. Of course, sweaters aren’t segmented to the PNW alone, they’re everywhere! A sweater could be as heavy as a jacket or as light as a cardigan. The range is ah-mazing, and creates so many fashion opportunities! With all of the different cuts, colors, and fabrics, it’s no surprise there’s a sweater that works for almost any location or vibe. For this weeks look I was a little extra (like always really) and paired two sweaters together. For my top, I chose one of my favorite staples; a white vintage sweater that was my mothers back in her college days. To layer over that, I chose an oversized chocolate brown sweater. Now, in general I’m cold almost all the time –it’s just my nature. On top of that, living in Oregon the weather isn’t usually warm and sunny, so I like to find ways to stay warm without lugging a huge jacket around. Wearing two sweaters is one of my favorite ways to accomplish this goal –worst case scenario I carry around a sweater (usually way lighter than a jacket), but typically I end up hands free! How my clothes feel and wear is really important to me. Don’t get me wrong, I am so the type of person to wear something crazy unconventional, but there’s a time and place for everything. For my general every day, I want my clothes to feel just as good as they look. Layered sweaters is of my favorite tricks to accomplish this!

Sweaters are also a good example of clothing that can be dressed up or down easily. Pairing these two sweaters with a beige skirt and some black tights creates a more dressy appearance. For this look I wasn’t necessarily going for dressy, but I wanted to look a little more polished. The skirt and tights help create that effect. In contrast, the combat boots may not be particularly fancy, but if I grabbed some high heeled boots, or saucy flats, I could easily dress up the outfit even more. Again, looking nice doesn’t mean you have to be uncomfortable. Despite it’s polished demeanor, this outfit is fairly simple, and very cozy. It might look like there’s a lot going on, but there’s not much to it. With minimal accessories and no jewelry, the outfit still looks complete. It’s wearable for numerous occasions; going out with friends, dinner, lunch, drinks, the zoo, there are so many options ! This is an easy every day look that anyone could accomplish and add their own personal flare.

The reason it all works together is because I used neutral colors, and simply added a scarf for a little spice. Neutrals don’t mean boring. Using multiple neutrals in one outfit like this allows for easy pairings without looking too matchy-matchy. If I had the same outfit on, but each article of clothing was in bright colors it wouldn’t look as calm or elegant. It would be loud, and probably a little obnoxious in comparison. I once again bring the credit back to mixing different neutrals. It’s easy and it creates a look that feels seamless without trying too hard. Plus, if you have an article of clothing you want to showcase, like my green leopard scarf, it’s the perfect way.

This week why not try a sassy sweater or a nice neutral? Create a look that makes you feel cozy and comfortable, but cool and vibrant at the same time –both are completely possible! As always, when playing with clothes the options are wonderfully endless, so why not give it a try?!

My Rosy Valentine

Helena Grace Photography

Valentines Day has always been one of my favorite holidays. I know that many like to point out the Hallmark of it all… but I like to look past that, and onto the romantic, blush, happiness gained by sharing time with loved ones. Besides, give me some red and pink heart decorations, and I’ll be swooning with joy. Add some glitter and well, it just doesn’t get better! Over the years I have worn a variety of pink and red shades for Valentines Day, but my favorite by far is the dusty rose blush color of this sweater. This is actually one of my favorite colors in general. Blush feels warm and cozy, but it still offers a lighter airy feel. It’s flowery, it’s romantic, and it’s a sweeter, more subtle version of pink. It feels mystical and fantasy-esque, (just a few of my favorite traits). For those of us that like to dress for the holiday, I think it’s really common to go with reds, and louder shades of pink, but why not try switching it up this year? Go light, go airy, go to a mythical Valentines oasis! Why not put on a whimsical blush color to accentuate a sweeter, more soulful side? If a light pink is too subtle for you, then add some shimmer, or a pop of glitter. You could also contrast it with some bolder reds and pinks. The light rosy shade can add depth and make brighter colors stand out. Thus making the outfit feel lavish, bright, and put together.

When I was creating this look I started with the full bell sleeved sweater. On its own it already makes a statement. It’s literally all sleeves! Such a bold sweater made in this color is striking despite it’s muted tone. Adding a high-waited jean skirt accentuates my frame, while the slit on the side shows some leg, to create length and detail. For a short person like myself, slits help add length to long garments that could otherwise swallow the legs! I can personally say, for my more petite friends, it’s nice to feel a little taller! For some extra warmth needed in typical Oregon weather, I added a creamy white shawl. This shawl emphasizes shape within the outfit, and helps contribute to the mythical feel of the look. It’s easy to think that bulky articles of clothing can be too much when paired together, but if the cut of each piece is right, you can pair heavier pieces together just fine! The triangle cut of the shawl is perfectly paired with the bellowing sleeves of the pink sweater. It doesn’t cover them up, but shows them off instead. These two pieces alone give off those dreamy Valentines Day vibes. Holidays are the perfect opportunity to get creative with clothes. There’s already a template laid out. Most holidays have a color scheme, special decorations, themes or events that can be used as inspiration!

This outfit is already soft due to the color scheme, so leaving my hair down and letting it do its natural thing helps add to that effect. On the other hand one thing that isn’t soft about this ensemble is the shoes. For a little spice I added a black combat boot (with black tights for warmth). I think these shoes give just the right amount of contrast to the look without taking away from the chimerical aesthetic. This concept it one of my favorite things about styling, you can pair pieces that you wouldn’t naturally think go together. It’s possible to create a look that says, “I’m sweet as syrup”, while also saying, “I’m actually a badass”. Contrasting two distinctive, yet very different moods, allows for the look to be that much more interesting and pleasing to the eye. I think the combat boots also portray a common Oregon fashion trend, i.e. clothes that provide warmth and comfort while still maintaining style and adding dramatic contrast. Us Oregonians like our clothes to be unique and contrast is a common result of that concept.

So, are you with me? This Valentines Day why not allow yourself try on enchanting? Look in your closet, what makes you feel dreamy and extravagant? Daring and free? Why not try some light dusty pink tones? Get rosy with your style, or simply get inspired by the holiday! I know many people don’t like the old school ‘only couples’ connotations of this holiday, so why not break through them with a fabulous outfit? Whether you take an idea from this blog, or you go a completely different direction is up to you. I just hope this weeks post inspires you to have fun with clothes. Whether you love the Holidays or not, each one comes around again every year, so why not give yourself a reason to have some fun? This look was one of my favorites to create because I love the mood it gives off. It makes me feel romantic and extravagant, but also powerful and confident. For me, there’s not much more I could ask for. And with that, all I have left to say is, Happy Valentines Day! I hope you have as many conversation hearts, and chocolates as your heart could possibly desire.

Simply Accessorize

Helen Grace Photography

When you’re getting dressed there are certain aspects that you consider, i.e. the weather, what you’ll be doing, if you’re feeling a particular way –if you want to look more edgy, relaxed, fancy etc. These are all things that we consider when we’re getting dressed, and the list could easily be much longer. One important aspect that should not be forgotten, is accessories. Jewelry, leggings, hats, scarfs, pins, etc. can all be used to spice up our appearance. Accessories can make or break a look, or completely change the tone. For my own personal style, I would say that I try to error on the side of too little, as opposed to too many accessories. The reason being is that for me it can be easy to get carried away! This is why I like to follow the advice of iconic elegance, the one and only Coco Chanel. As she would say, “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off”. However, unlike Coco perhaps, I have a solid love for the 80’s and their necklaces in bulk –so we look for a happy medium. Personally, I like to think of how many layers are in my outfit creating dimension. Then I think about if accessories would add or detract from that image. In an outfit like this one I don’t usually wear a lot of accessories because I don’t think they’re necessary. I could have added some bracelets or a big necklace, but the look already has a lot going on. I think the outfit speaks loud enough on it’s own, so I don’t want too many different aspects, as they could potentially take away more than they add.

Helena Grace Photography

The only true accessory that I added was a grey and black fedora-like hat. I think this hat is what makes the outfit into a full stylized ensemble. It grabs immediate attention but doesn’t take away from what the outfit already has going on. To reiterate, I could have added a necklace to create more focus on the center of the outfit, or I could’ve added earrings to give it obvious pizazz, but I really like the simplicity of this outfit on its own. I think the hat provides enough character that I don’t need to have any other accessories. The combination of colors and prints, lengths, and layers, contribute enough detail that I think the hat alone is the perfect touch.

Helena Grace Photography

I love this look because of the natural movement it possesses. Each layer is a different cut and length, so it’s easy to see the flow of the clothing on the body. Each of the center pieces are different colors, which creates a unique contrast. All the while, the black boots, leggings and hat allow for synchronicity; connecting each item of clothing together as one.

Helena Grace Photography

Lastly, this style of outfit that could be easily modified. Simply change one or two elements or accessories. It could be layered up further for a cold winter day, or it could be left as is for a brisk spring morning. For warmer weather the look could go through pretty minimal changes and be perfectly wearable as well. For example, wearing a black dress underneath the leopard shirt dress, instead of leggings, would make the appearance of the outfit much more summery and light. In this scenario I might take away the hat and add a headband or scarf to refocus the mood as more summery, or to apply a more bohemian vibe. In such a scenario I would probably change the shoes to sandals as well to completely convert the outfit. Regardless of your personal take on how many accessories is the right amount, they can completely change everything. Whether you’re aiming to be more minimal or go heavy on the application, the possibilities are endless.

Two for One deal.

Ever feel like you’ve rummaged through your entire closet, and yet still have nothing to wear? It’s a common problem that a lot of us experience. With trends coming and going all the time and we as people constantly changing and evolving, it can easily feel like our closet is outdated. But how are we supposed to fix this problem? Get rid of everything? Go and buy all new clothes? Sure, why not if you can afford it. But for most of us, unfortunately that really isn’t an option. However, there are some different things you can do to spruce up your closet without spending a cent! And we’re going to talk about one of them today.

Most of us have a couple articles of clothing that we consider staples, or favorites. Something that we wear a lot because either we really like it, it goes with everything, or maybe it’s just easy and requires no fuss. As much as I love clothes, even I’ll admit to days of just wanting to throw something on so I can run out the door as quickly as possible. What this fashion trick will teach you though, is how to use one or two clothing staples to create multiple outfits. It’s simple really, find an outfit you love. Take everything but the basic staples away, and then add a different jacket, shoes or accessories to make a completely new outfit. It’s a trick that requires little brain power while still giving you the chance to be creative and have fun.

Both of the looks above while very different, feature the same pair of boyfriends jeans, shirt, belt, and earrings, as well as the same make up. The things that changed are the shoes, the purse, hat/hair, scarf and jacket. For the look on the left, we’ll title it look #1 I went for a more sleek hair style, and focused the outfit on the basics themselves. The black purse and black combat boots add a simple color contrast between the leopard print and the jeans, helping pull the ensemble together while still giving off a relaxed attitude. For look #2 I grabbed a floppy hat, a grandma sweater, scarf and switched out the shoes and purse. The hat alone completely changes the look, but the sweater and scarf emphasizes a more cozy wintry feel. The bag makes the outfit feel more granola as opposed the sleek, and the shoes add a little cozy classy vibe with a heel.

These two looks are completely different but as you can see they use the same staples as a base. Experimenting with basics or staples in your wardrobe is the best and most cost effective secret to keeping your style up to date and fresh. Taking an outfit and asking questions like how could I make this different? What would it look like if I took away “_____” or added “_____”? Answering a few of these questions can be a really fun and liberating way to play with fashion and inspire your style. It doesn’t take much to completely change how an outfit looks. Taking my hair down and adding a hat was an easy change, then I just added a couple accessories from there. Now the next time you scour your closet and feel like you have nothing to wear, take a step back for a minute. Do you have something you wear all the time that you could tweak? Maybe you have an outfit you know you love but a different jacket would totally change things up. Whatever the idea, try it out! It’s super easy and really fun to see what you can come up with shopping and reinventing straight out of your own closet!

Recycle Your Fashion

I don’t know about you, but sometimes I find myself going through my closet asking when was the last time I wore a specific item. Sometimes the answer is fairly recent, and other times I realize it’s time to pass the piece on. However, every now and then there is a third option where I decide to reintroduce said item back into my current wardrobe to see if I still like it. This week I didn’t go through my physical closet but I did take a peek back into some past looks. Being sick this last week I haven’t been out bed much, but it’s given me plenty of time on the computer. I decided to do some electronic purging and in the process I found photos of some old outfit goodies I would still wear today. I haven’t had the chance to deep dive in my closet yet but I know I still own the jacket and boots that created the majority of this look. Despite it being about 7 years since these pictures were taken, it’s cool to recognize how although trends change, much of who we are, and what like can stay the same. Today I’m gonna show some old pictures and talk about one of my favorite outfits from when I was 18 with updates for you on how I would wear and style it differently today.

Right off the bat I can tell you that I still love this jacket and these boots. One thing I got right is letting the boots be the bold statement and not trying to add in too many other elements. Considering that the boots are pretty funky, black is never a bad pairing option for dressing them up a bit. I give myself a pat on the back for that. However, I completely hate that I paired blue jeans with this look. I don’t think there is anything wrong with blue and black together generally but the blue jeans I choose for this outfit don’t fit. I think they take away more than they add. Having this random blue in the middle of all black and gold, without any other context makes me question the overall aesthetic. That is never what you want when you’re making a fashion statement. For the put together image I was going for, it would be much better if I had worn black jeans or a black dress and tights. Today, if I was going to wear this outfit again I would make that change first.

This look would be much more chic, and cohesive without the blue jeans. By comparing the black and white vs the color photos above you’ll see the difference I am talking about. At the time of these photos, the reason I left the jacket buttoned all the way up was because I didn’t know what shirt to wear underneath. Of course I don’t think this was a wrong choice, but functionally speaking I would want a shirt that goes with the jacket as well. For this look I would wear a black camisole with some lace, tucked in, or a black blouse that would be similar length to the jacket. One with some lace or flower detailing but no color. That way the look is maintained with or without the jacket –making it much more practical for every day wear. For pants I would definitely go with black as I mentioned above. I have a favorite pair of black jeans but black leggings or dress pants could also work. A black dress and tights is also an option. Off the top of my head I would definitely stick with a fitted dress as opposed to something flowy, so the jacket isn’t trying to compete too much with a different cut of clothing or taking away from the boots.

For accessories I would stick to the black theme and go for a small shoulder bag or a clutch. For size I wouldn’t do anything too bulky, I would really want to keep the statement of the shoes and only add color in when it comes to jewelry. For jewelry I would try to match the gold detailing of the boots with some statement earrings. Bold earrings would be my first choice, but if for some reason I wasn’t wasn’t feeling big earrings or I wanted to do multiples I’d go with some small pearl studs or gold studs. In the photo above I can see I’m wearing a ring but it doesn’t really do anything for the outfit. Presently I would choose to wear some simple black or gold rings with an ensemble like this or nix the rings altogether.

Last but certainly not least is my hair. I am not a hair stylist or hair professional but I try to style my hair akin to my outfit as much as possible. I like my hair down in these photos, but for a more coordinated look I would put my hair up in a bun to smooth everything out and add structure. I think a bun would add some class, and pull details together to make the everything feel finished and seamless.

After those tweaks you have an updated outfit that I would definitely wear again today. Who knows, maybe you’ll see some updated pics soon!

Zippy Classic with a little Art and Soul.

One of my favorite things about clothes is how you can pair pieces from completely different decades to create a whole new statement. For this look I took a deep dusty blue blazer and paired it with a bold printed shirt dress. Instead of wearing the dress as a dress however, I left it unbuttoned, styled it as a cardigan, and wore a little black dress underneath. Forever and always layers will be one of favorite things. I feel they add so much contrast and fun to any outfit, and this one is no exception. Moving downward, I added some super shiny pointed black heels and some black tights. For accessories I used my favorite red bag and some handmade jewelry I got a few years ago from an artist friend. The jewelry isn’t super prominent in the overall look, so I did add a shot of the earrings and necklace below for your viewing pleasure.

Usually when I see 70’s style blazers like this one, I end up cutting out the shoulder pads when I get them home. However, with this blazer I actually love it as is. Somehow I don’t feel too boxy with the shoulder pads, but rather love the dynamic and shape they add to the outfit. Keeping the shoulder pads in has definitely changed how the outfit moves, but I still love the way it wears. The black and white shirt, I found in a box of my moms old clothes and I immediately snatched it for my closet. Again, I love layers and these two items together make me so happy, I simply can’t get enough of those mix-n-match oversized vibes.

Keeping the rest of look all black allows for there to be focused attention on the bolder pieces without looking too busy. The layers create movement in the look while the simplicity of the little black dress and tights show there is a person underneath the boxy structure. The high heels add a little feminine touch to the masculine edge, and the jewelry brings a little artistic flare to the overall aesthetic. Adding a little bit more color with the red statement bag gives the outfit more density, and pop as well. This outfit gives me 70’s and 80’s vibes because of the layers and different decades the pieces were popular. Pairing them together reminds me of the 60’s because of how women were wearing more menswear type clothing at that time. Of course this outfit could be worn numerous places and on many occasions, but I like to think that it has a professional appeal that could potentially inspire more bold and colorful professional looks. Ones that don’t feel drab or toned down as some business attire can be.

Make up, while completely optional like everything in style and expression, is a big part of my personal style and how I like to express myself. In this look I feel it is an integral detail, pulling all the pieces together. I really wanted to add some color and funkiness. So, I created a transitioning orange, red, and blue eye to freshen and spice everything up.

A lot of the time I love to curl or straighten my hair but for this look I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. My natural hair is sometimes more straight than wavy, sometimes more wavy than straight. It can be half curly, half straight, or just whole crazy, –it really depends on the day. On this particular day though, I was feeling the messy curly style that it naturally has so I left it alone and let it add to the layers of the outfit. I think this look is easy to recreate with any layers you could find at home or at a thrift store. Throw some loose pieces with some fitted ones and some classic heels, ya can’t go wrong! If you wanted to look more casual, lose the blazer and add a funky faux fur coat or a vest! Maybe throw in some cute tennis shoes or boots? It would totally work, and look amazing!

Welcome

Hello and welcome to my blog! My name is Erica-Renee and I decided that this year I would finally dive into the fashion blog I’ve always wanted to do but always put on the back burner… until now! If you want to know a little bit more about my vision behind my blog and the kind of content I’ll be providing go ahead and checkout my Vision page, but if want to skip straight to the main content just keep on reading!

As a 20-something girl in Oregon I would say this is a pretty standard outfit. Anyone could pull this look out of their closet and rock it in every day life. Sweaters and boyfriend jeans are popular all over the West Coast but specifically in cities and towns close to, or surrounding Portland, which isn’t too far from where I live. Overall the reason I love this outfit so much is because it is so versatile. I could wear this outfit on a number of occasions and not look or feel out of place. Whether it’s grabbing a drink, running errands, a Holiday event, or meeting for coffee with a friend –this outfit holds up. During the winters it’s hard to know what the weather will do in the PNW, so it’s good to have an outfit that can conform easily or that doesn’t scream only one type of function. Something that’s comfortable like a sweater and jeans can be kept light in the summer or made warmer in the winter by adding some layers. I used a t-shirt and thick black tights to keep myself cozy warm underneath. I paired the outfit with a Tweed jacket that would add a layer of warmth but that wasn’t so heavy it would weigh me down. The contrast of fitted and loose together gives off an effortless flare that’s never a bad thing! Plus who doesn’t love some mixed and matched neutral colors?

I love the cozy Portland vibe this outfit portrays as well. This vintage sweater was actually my moms back in the day and it’s become a favorite in my sweater rotation. I love it because it’s fitted like a shirt, but gives off all the right sweater weather feels. Fitted sweaters are great because they are warm and not super-flashy if that’s not your thing, but they also don’t make you feel like you’re hiding if you’re going out with friends. I paired this sweater with boyfriend jeans because they are lose but also fitted. They aren’t tight, but they also don’t make me feel like I’m hiding under something super baggy (makes me feel like I still have legs). Pulling the outfit together with some black high heeled fuzzy booties, and a black baseball belt to cinch the waist, continues to emphasize the mix n’ match tone of the outfit, but expresses an intentional pulled together look.

Lastly making the outfit into a final look, a messy bun and a smokey eye add to the laid-back but intentional dynamic. All the contrast going on within this look is what makes it so versatile and fresh. And of course, the last but (for me) always essential accessory, is the bag! For this look I added a little brown box tote for all the essentials I need for an outing. This bag compliments the look by adding another neutral so as not to take away from the look, but adding an element to draw the eye in. Suddenly, voila, the outfit is complete!
